Agile Chemical Facility, Phase 3

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Indian Head Division (IHD)

Maryland, United States

A multidisciplinary, cross functional team at Mason & Hanger was employed for this project. This project included development of technology and processes for the production of propellant formulations, including various nitrate esters Participants included SMEs for ESS , hazards analysis, process control and automation, value engineering studies, geotechnical studies, topographic surveys, air permitting, and storm water permitting. This team was led by a full discipline of architects and engineers, including chemical engineers, for the chemical process design. The team also included Navy research and development personnel from the NSWC IHD Naval Support Facility. Biazzi, a foreign entity company, also participated in the project as equipment supplier and remote automation and process sequencing expert for production of the nitrate esters propellant formulations.

This project demonstrates Mason & Hanger's expertise and focus on customer satisfaction. This project is one of many propellant processing facilities that we have worked on with NAVFAC Washington. The primary scope of work for this project included analyzing processes and designing equipment for the production of highly sensitive propellant formulations. Our design included evaluation of existing facilities and design for construction of code compliant facilities. It also demonstrates Mason & Hanger's ability to work with foreign entities, design modern processes that remove humans from hazardous operations, analysis and mitigation of process hazards, and explosive site safety approval through the DDESB.
