Artificial Intelligence (AI) may bring forward a new era for the design and construction industry, especially in code compliance, according to Novedge. AI technology offers the potential to assist the architect and engineer in streamlining and enhancing the compliance checking process by automating the analysis of design documents against complex building codes. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and big data analytics, AI systems, potentially in the near future, can rapidly process vast amounts of information, identifying areas where design may not meet regulatory requirements.
The top benefits of using AI tools to assist building codes include:
Users have the ability to log in to AI tools and applications at any time of day.
AI-powered tools can reduce human error in code interpretation and compliance checks.
AI can quickly identify relevant codes, saving time and effort for architects, engineers, and contractors.
AI algorithms can be trained to recognize patterns in building designs, materials, and construction practices that are associated with code compliance or potential violations.
AI can streamline the design and construction process, saving time and resources.
AI aims to assist designers in their overall plan approach, leaving the designer to fully own the strategy.
AI can help identify and correct errors in building plans and designs, leading to safer and more durable structures.
AI systems can analyze blueprints and layouts against building codes, identifying potential violations before construction begins.
As an industry, we can embrace new digital tools to drive efficiency and growth in our projects. With AI we have access to information and services at any time of day. Content that is printed in a book does not have ability to be quickly updated. AI has the potential to be more accurate because it can be adjusted at any time. With each use, AI grows its database and becomes smarter. The information is more highly consumable and speeds up information gathering when architects have a quick turnaround for a project.
The current AI assistance tools available offer answers and assistance on basic compliance requirement questions at any time. These programs include Revit and ICC AI Navigator.
Launched in 2024, the International Code Council (ICC)’s AI Navigator system uses Large Language Model (LLM) artificial intelligence to provide answers and guidance to the relevant code content for users of our Digital Codes platform. Ed Cilurso, Project lead on AI Navigator, International Code Council, describes it as “a custom large language model AI tool that is specifically for questions on ICC Codes.” The system allows you to choose codes you have questions about, prompts you to ask those questions, and users can get answers quickly.
Looking Ahead
As the technology continues to adapt and advance, AI in building code compliance will be here to stay. With more use, the AI will become smarter and will allow AI to handle more complex compliance scenarios and provide more sophisticated analysis. The new technology will assist professionals in the architectural industry accelerate their turnaround time and become more efficient in their role. Together we can embrace the digital transformation and help advance the industry.
