Our People

Meet Jim...

Director of Architecture

"Every individual at Mason & Hanger contributes to our collective success in every way. From personal interactions sharing ideas to amazing individual efforts honing our disparate expertise, to solving incredibly challenging projects.”

How did you end up in your current position?

Mason & Hanger was my most steady, dependable, and favorite consultant for 15 years. Working and traveling with the Mason & Hanger professionals over the years on incredible projects has been enriching, developing awesome professional relationships. When the Director of Architecture position was posted, I knew it was the job for me! I like to think I interviewed Mason & Hanger for 15 years and decided they could use my help! Seriously though, looking back now, I should have joined Mason & Hanger years ago, I’m absolutely happy and proud to be part of this company.

What does your job entail?

Looking out for our firm and the continual enrichment of the department in many aspects: growth, market expansion, design strategy, high quality, and promoting innovation. Empowering professionals to excel and grow professionally working on incredible projects building a more secure world.

What do you love most about your job?

The people I work with, the clients I work for, travel, and incredible project opportunities. Every individual at Mason & Hanger contributes to our collective success in every way. From personal interactions sharing ideas to amazing individual efforts honing our disparate expertise, to solving incredibly challenging projects.

What has changed in your industry over time?

What hasn’t changed! I started working prior to the world of CADD! Armed with a T square & vellum advancing on to a parallel bar and electric eraser were the cool tools of the time! I’m truly prehistoric! Imagine completing construction documents with no computers, CADD, fax machines, internet or cell phones! My first cell phone I referred to as a brick (2x4x6in)! (Microsoft, word, excel, InDesign, PhotoShop and pdf’s were a few years away when got out of school!!)

I have been incredibly fortunate to be a participant of innovation and tremendous growth of technology in the profession; hand drafting to CADD to development of BIM, graphic, rendering, Virtual Reality (VR) & Digital Twin technologies we are using today. As well as the advancement of building system assemblies and sustainable technologies, enabling high performance building design has been tremendous to experience.

Most recently, this past year’s challenge was learning to deliver our work remotely, without a normal design studio. Our only choice…improve our communication and collaboration skills. We have definitely improved interactively navigating our new normal design world.

What do you feel you do to make the world a better place through your work?

I know what Mason & Hanger, my firm, and this profession in general, has done to improve “the built environment with safe facilities around the world” one project at a time. I am proud to say that I have been programming, planning, designing, and constructing safe and secure facilities around the world for more than 30 years. I consider myself lucky since 1990, I’ve been Building a More Secure World, traveling to 80+ countries working on projects in nearly every country on Earth!
